SICILY

EXCURSIONS

You need a car to visit the countless treasures of Eastern Sicily.

We cannot but start from Siracusa (15 km) , “ …the most beautiful of the Greek cities…” according to Cicero. The island of Ortigia, “the downtown” of Siracusa, is an architectural treasure chest with buildings, temples, mansions, convents and churches spanning 25 centuries.

UNESCO heritage, the Val di Noto, is a mine of exceptional townships: Noto (15 km), with its incredible baroque skyline, Palazzolo Acreide (30km) with its very long baroque balcony and the near Greek theater in Akrai. Modica (55km) and its unique chocolate, Scicli (65km) as well as the magnificent Ragusa (72 km) which bring to our memory the Montalbano stories and his stunning locations (Punta Secca, Donnafugata…)

If you are willing to go a little further you must consider Agrigento and The Valley of the Temples  or the wonderment of Taormina with another Greek theatre verlooking the sea.

He trail of history is everywhere: the prehistoric remains of Pantalica (50km) or the very close Roman Villa del Tellaro remind us of a world so far away and still so very close…

Going back to the seaside, we should spend at least one day in the amazing Oasis of Vendicari, where plenty of birds species reside during their migrations and where you can rest sunbathing in the the famous Calamosche bay (26 km)
